Some people think that childhood dental problems aren’t very important, since all of their child’s teeth will eventually fall out and be replaced by permanent ones.  However, problems in early childhood can affect the gums and lead to other long-term problems.   That’s why it’s important to catch any problems as early as possible by bringing your child to a dentist on a regular basis.

Not all dental problems can be prevented—some are genetic, and others are contagious—but almost all can be treated and cured.  Here are two common childhood dental problems and suggestions for how to prevent them:

  • Early childhood caries: This is often caused by sugars that are allowed to sit in the mouth for extended periods.   Caries is contagious, but one way to help protect your child is to carefully control their sugar intake (remember that even fruit juice and milk have some sugar) so that the bacteria that cause the disease are not given a good environment.
  • Abscess: An abscessed tooth occurs when there is an infection near the root of the tooth.  These are almost always quite painful and can be accompanied with fever, and they are often the result of tooth decay.  The best way to avoid abscessed teeth is to make sure that your child brushes and flosses regularly and that they are visiting a dentist every six months.

Fortunately, most childhood dental problems are relatively easy to treat, especially if they are caught early on.  If you suspect that your child has any of these problems, bring them to the best Utah pediatric dentist!
