3 Bad Biting Habits and How to Avoid Them
As their baby teeth develop, kids already begin to fall into bad biting habits. While these will often start at a young age, they have the potential to continue into adulthood, affecting their teeth and causing life long problems. Stop your children’s bad biting habits early on to help keep their teeth free from problems.
One of the most common bad biting habits of children and adults is to bite their fingernails. This habit has roots in the infant stages as one of babies first reflex reactions is to put their hands in their mouths. This leads to thumb sucking and eventually to biting the nails.
While biting your nails isn’t necessarily dangerous, it can be very unsanitary. Kids come into contact with all sorts of germs in their day to day lives. Sometimes a child biting their nails could indicate a deeper problem is present. Observe whether your child is under more stress than usual, then talk to them about it. Explain how bad it can be to bite their nails, using positive reinforcement to distract them. This will help keep their teeth from little damages.
Chewing on Clothes
Another nervous habit that some children will develop is sucking and chewing on their shirt. This unsanitary habit can cause multiple problems, but generally will stop after a few years. To prevent it now, try to find the root of the problem. If your child doing this as a result of anxiety, find what is causing this and do what you can to sooth it. Whenever you see them doing this, direct their attention away to other activities. This distraction will help them to more easily break the habit, avoiding the problems associated here.
Once your child begins school, their nervous habits may be translated to chewing of the pencil. While the ultimate goal is to stop the chewing all together, there are temporary solutions that can be employed in the meantime. Products have been designed to go on the end of pencils for children to chew on. This will be better to their teeth than the pencil, but should not be a permanent solution. With this as well it will be best to find the root of the problem, then build from there.
